Cato the Elder, also known as Cato the Censor, was a Roman soldier, senator, and historian celebrated for his staunch conservatism and opposition to Hellenization. He was the first to document history in Latin through his work Origines, which focused on the history of Rome. His De agri cultura stands as the oldest surviving prose in Latin, delving into topics such as agriculture, farming, rituals, and recipes. Throughout his career, Cato held various significant positions such as military tribune, quaestor, aedile, praetor, consul, and censor, where he dedicated himself to preserving Rome’s traditions and combating Hellenistic influences.
