Childhood & Early Life
Carrie Marie Underwood was born on 10 March 1983, in Muskogee, Oklahoma, USA, to Steve and Carole Underwood. Her mother was an elementary school teacher and her father, a sawmill worker. Carrie and her two older sisters were raised in a farm in Checotah.
She attended ‘Checotah High School’ where she played basketball and softball. She auditioned for ‘Capitol Records,’ but nothing came out of it.
After passing out of high school, she joined ‘Northeastern State University’ in Oklahoma where she pursued mass communication. While studying at the university, she took part in numerous beauty pageants. In 2004, she was adjudged Miss NSU runner-up. She graduated in 2006.
Career
In 2004, Carrie Underwood auditioned for the reality show ‘American Idol.’ She won Season 4 and earned herself a recording contract.
She made her debut with the release of the single ‘Inside Your Heaven’ in June 2005. It reached No.1 on the ‘Billboard Hot 100.’ It also became a popular single in Canada that year.
In December 2006, she was featured on ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show.’ She sang ‘For Once In My Life’ alongside stars, such as Tony Bennet, Michael Buble, and Josh Groban.
In April 2007, the singer released her single ‘Wasted’ which topped the ‘Country Songs Chart’ and sold nearly a million copies. The single received a gold certification from ‘The Recording Industry Association of America’ (RIAA).
She performed at the 2007 ‘Idol Gives Back Concert’ where she sang ‘I’ll Stand By You,’ her version of The Pretenders’ hit which entered the ‘Billboard Chart’ at No. 6.
In 2007, her second album ‘Carnival Ride,’ written in collaboration with ‘Music Row’ writers, was released. It peaked at No.1 on the ‘Billboard Chart,’ ‘Country Albums Chart,’ and ‘Canadian Albums Chart.’
In February 2008, she embarked on her ‘Carnival Ride Tour’ which was attended by approximately 1.2 million fans from all over North America, making her the top selling female touring artist of the year.
She recorded the classic ‘I’ll Be Home For Christmas’ for the album ‘Christmas Duets’ upon the request of Elvis Presley’s ex-wife Priscilla.
She surprised everyone with her acting skills in ‘How I Met Your Mother,’ an American sitcom, in 2010. The episode, watched by 10.48 million viewers, marked her debut as an actor.
Her ‘Play On Tour’ started in March 2010 in Reading, Pennsylvania and ended in Michigan in 2011. She performed to over 1 million fans throughout the tour; it is her largest tour to date.
Her fourth album ‘Blown Away’ released in May 2012. It was received favorably by the fans and critics alike. She wanted the album to sound different from her previous albums and hence combined elements of country, pop, and rock.
She played the role of ‘Maria von Trapp’ in ‘The Sound of Music Live!,’ a TV special based on the original Broadway musical. It was originally aired on NBC on December 5, 2013.
Her fifth album ‘Storyteller’ was released in 2015. Upon the release of the album, Underwood became the only country artist to have her first five studio albums reaching either number one or two on ‘Billboard 200’ chart.
She came up with a fitness clothing line named ‘CALIA by Carrie Underwood’ in 2015.
Her sixth album ‘Cry Pretty’ was released in 2018. It became the best-selling solo female album of the year.
Awards & Achievements
Carrie Underwood had a terrific winning streak of 10 ‘Academy of Country Music Awards’ between 2006 and 2010. During the streak, she won ‘Entertainer of the Year Award’ twice, becoming the first woman to do so.
In 2007, she won ‘Grammy Awards’ under the categories: ‘Best New Artist’ and ‘Best Female Country Vocal Performance.’
The singer was officially inducted into the ‘Grand Ole Opry’ by Garth Brooks in 2008.
She won seven ‘American Music Awards’ out of 12 nominations between 2010 and 2012.
Personal Life & Legacy
After a series of relationships, Carrie Underwood married the professional league hockey player Mike Fisher in 2010 in a grand ceremony which was attended by Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, and many ‘National Hockey League’ players.
A passionate animal lover, she became a vegetarian at the age of 13 as she could not stand the thought of eating one of her farm animals.
Carrie gave birth to her first son Isaiah Michael Fisher in 2015. Her second son Jacob Bryan Fisher was born in 2019.
