His bravery at the Battle of Isurava in the Kokoda Track Campaign in New Guinea led to him being posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross. Kingsbury volunteered to counter-attack after his platoon was overrun by the Japanese, clearing a path through the enemy and saving his battalion’s headquarters.
