Boris Vasilievich Spassky, a Russian chess grandmaster and former World Chess Champion, had a successful professional career with multiple Soviet Chess Championship victories. He also appeared as a candidate in the World Chess Championship several times. He is known for his famous win against Tigran Petrosian in 1969, which led to him becoming world champion. Spassky also notably lost to Bobby Fischer in 1972. Even after immigrating to France and becoming a French citizen in 1976, Spassky continued to compete in chess tournaments, although he was no longer a top contender for the world title.
