Robert Louis Behnken, an American engineer and former NASA astronaut, holds a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering. He was a colonel in the U.S. Air Force before joining NASA in 2000. Behnken participated in Space Shuttle missions STS-123 and STS-130, logging over 708 hours in space and 55 hours of spacewalk time. After the retirement of the Space Shuttle program, he assumed the role of Chief of the Astronaut Office. In 2018, Behnken was assigned to the SpaceX Dragon 2 and was part of its first crewed mission in 2020, marking him as one of the pioneers to launch aboard a commercial orbital spacecraft.
