Billie Holiday, also known as “Lady Day,” was a highly influential American jazz and swing music singer. She had a unique vocal style that was inspired by jazz instrumentalists and made a significant impact on jazz music and pop singing. Holiday began her career performing in Harlem nightclubs before signing with Brunswick in 1935. She achieved mainstream success in the 1930s and 1940s with hits such as “What a Little Moonlight Can Do.” Despite facing legal troubles and struggling with drug abuse, Holiday continued to perform successfully into the 1950s, including memorable concerts at Carnegie Hall. Her final recordings, including the album “Lady in Satin,” received mixed reactions but were commercially successful. Holiday was posthumously honored with four Grammy Awards and was inducted into several music halls of fame.
