Bill Joy is a notable American computer engineer and venture capitalist who co-founded Sun Microsystems in 1982. Serving as Chief Scientist and CTO until 2003, he made significant contributions to the early development of BSD UNIX and created the vi text editor. His essay “Why The Future Doesn’t Need Us” raised concerns about modern technologies. In recognition of his achievements in operating systems and networking software, Joy was elected as a member of the National Academy of Engineering in 1999.
