Benjamin David Goodman, also known as the “King of Swing,” was an influential American clarinetist and bandleader. Leading one of the most popular swing big bands in the US from 1936 to the mid-1940s, he achieved fame for his pivotal 1938 concert at Carnegie Hall, a significant moment in jazz history. Goodman’s bands played a key role in launching the careers of many jazz musicians, and he notably led one of the first integrated jazz groups during a time of racial segregation. He continued to perform and explore classical music until his passing.
