Barton Childs was an influential American pediatrician and geneticist known for his pioneering research in genetics. His studies on adrenal hyperplasia, Crigler–Najjar syndrome, and propionic acidemia were groundbreaking. Childs collaborated with fellow researchers to discover key genetic principles, such as X-linked recessive genetic diseases and dosage compensation mechanisms in mammalian cells. He authored several works on genetic counseling, screening, and behavioral genetics, including the notable book “Genetic Medicine: A Logic of Disease.” Childs held a professor emeritus position at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine until his retirement.
