He rose to fame in the 1980s and 1990s with his filmi soundtracks, achieving major success in Bengali, Telugu, and Kannada films. Lahiri sang his own compositions and continued to receive acclaim well into the 21st century. In 1986, he set a Guinness World Record by recording over 180 songs in a single year.
