Augusto César Sandino, a Nicaraguan revolutionary, led a rebellion against the United States occupation of Nicaragua from 1927 to 1933. Despite being labeled a “bandit” by the US government, he emerged as a symbol of resistance to American imperialism in Latin America. Sandino engaged in guerrilla warfare against US Marine Corps units, compelling their withdrawal from Nicaragua. His assassination in 1934 did not diminish his legacy, which was carried forward by the Sandinista National Liberation Front. This group eventually toppled the Somoza government in 1979.
