Anthony Kennedy was an American attorney and jurist who served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1988 until his retirement in 2018. Nominated by President Ronald Reagan in 1987, Kennedy was known as the swing vote on many 5-4 decisions of the Roberts Court. Prior to his Supreme Court tenure, he served as a federal judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Kennedy authored majority opinions in significant cases, including those involving gay rights, campaign finance, and abortion rights.
