She wrote children’s books in the 1930s and advised her father, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, during World War II. Halsted also worked as an editor at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and later held public relations positions at universities. She was appointed to advisory roles by Presidents Kennedy and Roosevelt, where she focused on women’s rights and human rights advocacy.
