Anna Maria Luisa de’ Medici was a renowned patron of the arts, who left the Medici family’s extensive art collection to the Tuscan state. As Electress of the Palatinate, she promoted musicians and made the Palatine court a prominent music hub. Despite changes to Tuscan succession laws, she was overlooked for the throne in favor of Duke Francis Stephen of Lorraine. Upon her return to Florence, she held the title of first lady until her brother’s ascension, following which she was exiled.
