Alfred Francis Russell, an Americo-Liberian missionary, planter, and politician, held various significant roles in Liberia. He served as the tenth president of the country from 1883 to 1884, after being vice-president under Anthony William Gardiner. Emancipated in 1833, Russell migrated to Liberia from the United States. A Methodist missionary by profession, he also owned a substantial farm cultivating coffee and sugarcane. In addition to his agricultural pursuits, he contributed to Liberian politics by serving in the Senate and holding the position of President Pro Tempore.
