Al-Khalil ibn Ahmad al-Farahidi, an influential Arab philologist, lexicographer, and grammarian from Basra, Iraq, is renowned for his creation of the first Arabic dictionary, Kitab al-‘Ayn, and the establishment of the standard harakat system for Arabic script. A key figure in the early advancement of Arabic prosody, his work extended to the domains of musicology and poetic meter. Al-Farahidi’s linguistic theories left a lasting impact on Persian, Turkish, Kurdish, and Urdu prosody, and he was a pioneer in the analysis of Classical Arabic poetry, as well as a significant contributor to the field of cryptography.
