Abel Janszoon Tasman was a Dutch seafarer and explorer known for his voyages with the Dutch East India Company. He started as a merchant seaman and later joined the VOC in 1633. Despite facing conflict with the Māori people in New Zealand, his expedition played a crucial role in paving the way for future exploration and colonization of Australia and New Zealand.
