Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi, a Libyan individual with a diverse professional background, held positions such as the head of security for Libyan Arab Airlines and as the director of the Centre for Strategic Studies in Tripoli, Libya. He was also identified as an alleged Libyan intelligence officer. In 2001, al-Megrahi was convicted by a panel of Scottish judges for his role in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland in 1988. Despite several unsuccessful appeals, he was granted leave to appeal his conviction in 2007, which he later abandoned in 2009.
