Rafael Gómez Ortega, also known as El Gallo, was a prominent bullfighter in the early twentieth century. He was known for his unique fighting techniques, including the espantada and fighting bulls from a chair. While he displayed occasional bravery in the ring, there were moments of fear when facing the bulls. Despite retiring in 1936, he was brought back seven times due to his entertaining style. Ortega faced financial struggles after retirement and received support from Juan Belmonte. He was briefly married to flamenco dancer Pastora Imperio before his passing in 1960.
