He began his career competing in both the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) and Championship Bull Riding (CBR) circuits before focusing exclusively on PBR in 2006. Mauney quickly gained recognition, winning the PBR Rookie of the Year title in his first year and going on to secure the PBR world championship in 2013 and 2015. He later shifted to full-time competition in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) and is widely esteemed as one of the top bull riders of his era.
