Ron McKernan, also known as Pigpen, co-founded the Grateful Dead and performed with the band from 1965 to 1972. He drew inspiration from African-American music, particularly the blues, and self-taught himself harmonica and piano. Initially the lead vocalist, he showcased his skills on harmonica and electric organ, but faced challenges adapting to the group’s changing musical direction. Sadly, his health declined due to alcoholism and liver issues, prompting him to retire from touring in 1972. Tragically, he passed away at the age of 27 in 1973.
