He currently directs the Biophysical Chemistry Laboratory at a joint facility of the French National Center for Scientific Research and the University of Strasbourg, France. Karplus also holds the title of Theodore William Richards Professor of Chemistry, emeritus at Harvard University. In 2013, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, along with Michael Levitt and Arieh Warshel, for their groundbreaking work on developing multiscale models for complex chemical systems.
