James Stockdale was a highly decorated United States Navy vice admiral and aviator. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Vietnam War. Stockdale was held captive as a prisoner of war for over seven years and became the highest-ranking naval officer in captivity in Hanoi, North Vietnam. He played a significant role in aerial missions during the Gulf of Tonkin incident and later served as a commander and president of institutions such as the Naval War College and The Citadel. Stockdale also ran as a vice presidential candidate in the 1992 election.
