Valentín Gómez Farías, a Mexican physician and liberal politician, held the presidency of Mexico twice. He pursued liberal policies to diminish the influence of the Mexican Army and Catholic Church, and pursued legal action against officials from the preceding conservative administration. In the face of resistance, he persisted in his push for a federalist system. Gómez Farías was instrumental in the crucial La Reforma movement, which culminated in the Constitution of 1857 and the adoption of many of his reforms.
