He established the Winton Motor Carriage Company in 1897, contributing significantly to Cleveland, Ohio’s emergence as a key hub for early automotive production. Winton’s notable achievements include undertaking one of the earliest long-distance car trips in the U.S. and creating early commercial diesel engines. Shifting his focus to powertrain engineering, he eventually sold his company to General Motors in 1930.
