She broke the 4-minute barrier in the 400m freestyle and held the women’s 200m freestyle world record, making history. Pellegrini’s career is highlighted by winning a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, becoming Italy’s first female Olympic swimming champion. She set numerous world records and is the only swimmer to achieve eight consecutive medals in the same event at the World Championships.
