Grethe Rask, a Danish physician and surgeon, worked in Zaïre, now the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In 1972, she established her own hospital in the village of Abumombazi. Later, she transferred to the Danish Red Cross Hospital in Kinshasa in 1975. Rask returned to Denmark in 1977 due to symptoms of an unknown infectious disease, which was later identified as AIDS. She was one of the first non-Africans and the first woman known to have died from AIDS-related causes, marking a significant moment in medical history.
