Initially a publicist for a left-leaning political magazine, he later trained as a pilot and worked in the Ministry of Aviation. Schulze-Boysen collaborated with others to resist the Nazi regime by collecting and sharing information about Wehrmacht involvement in the Spanish Civil War. Transitioning from resistance activities to espionage as the war progressed, he worked with a small group that eventually collaborated with Soviet intelligence.
