Hiroo Onoda, a second lieutenant in the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II, became known for his persistence in fighting long after the war had ended in 1945. For nearly 29 years, Onoda engaged in guerrilla warfare on Lubang Island in the Philippines, participating in shootouts with locals and law enforcement. In 1974, his former commanding officer relieved him of duty, prompting Onoda to surrender and return to Japan where he was hailed as a hero.
