Al-Battānī, also known as Albategnius, was a prominent astronomer, astrologer, and mathematician in the medieval Islamic world. He resided mainly in Raqqa, Syria, where he made significant contributions to astronomy and mathematics. His work, particularly his Kitāb az-Zīj aṣ-Ṣābi’, played a crucial role in the development of Western science. Al-Battānī refined Ptolemy’s Almagest, introduced new ideas, and provided accurate astronomical tables. His observations and calculations on solar eclipses, Earth’s obliquity, and trigonometry had a profound impact on subsequent astronomers like Copernicus, Brahe, Kepler, Galileo, and Halley.
