He worked at the Texas General Land Office and the First National Bank of Austin while developing characters for his tales. He later moved to Houston and then fled to Honduras due to embezzlement charges, where he wrote “Cabbages and Kings.” Upon returning to the U.S., he served a prison sentence during which he wrote stories under various pseudonyms, including O. Henry. After his release, he relocated to New York City and wrote hundreds of short stories.
