Aristarchus of Samos, an ancient Greek astronomer and mathematician, is renowned for proposing the first heliocentric model, which positioned the Sun at the center of the universe. A student of Strato of Lampsacus, he made significant contributions to astronomy, such as creating sundials and estimating the sizes and distances of celestial bodies. By challenging the prevailing geocentric theories of his era, influenced by earlier philosophers like Philolaus, Aristarchus laid the groundwork for future astronomers, including Copernicus. Alongside Hipparchus, Aristarchus is celebrated as one of antiquity’s greatest astronomers.
