Vice-Admiral John Byron was a respected British Royal Navy officer renowned for his exploration achievements. He was nicknamed “Foul-Weather Jack” because of his numerous experiences with severe sea conditions. Byron sailed with George Anson’s squadron, led a circumnavigation as a commodore, and served as the governor of Newfoundland. Engaging in battles during the Seven Years’ War and the American Revolution, he eventually attained the rank of Vice Admiral of the White before his death in 1786.
