Jan Janszoon van Haarlem, also known as Reis Mourad the Younger, transitioned from a Dutch pirate to a Barbary corsair in Ottoman Algeria and the Republic of Salé. Captured by Algerian corsairs, he converted to Islam and adopted the name Mourad. He gained recognition as a prominent 17th-century Barbary corsair, playing a key role in establishing the Republic of Salé. Jan Janszoon held significant positions within Salé, serving as its first President and Commander, as well as Governor of Oualidia.
