William C. McCool was a distinguished American naval officer, aviator, test pilot, aeronautical engineer, and NASA astronaut. He piloted Space Shuttle Columbia mission STS-107. Tragically, McCool and the entire crew lost their lives when Columbia disintegrated during reentry. McCool was posthumously awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor for his bravery and dedication to advancing human understanding of space.
