Alexandra Kollontai was a prominent Russian revolutionary, politician, diplomat, and Marxist theoretician. She served as the People’s Commissar for Welfare in Lenin’s government, making history as the first woman cabinet minister and ambassador. Kollontai was actively involved in radical politics from the 1890s onwards, initially aligning with the Mensheviks before ultimately joining the Bolsheviks. She played a crucial role in the October Revolution and the formation of the Soviet Union. Notably, Kollontai was a trailblazer in advocating for women’s rights, spearheading the establishment of the Zhenotdel department. In addition to her advocacy work, she also raised concerns about bureaucratic influences within the Communist Party. Following her diplomatic service, Kollontai retired in 1945.
