Charlotte Corday, a sympathizer of the moderate Girondins faction during the French Revolution, believed that the radical actions of the Jacobins, particularly Jean-Paul Marat, were endangering the Revolution. In an effort to protect the cause, she assassinated Marat on 13 July 1793 while he was in a medicinal bath. Corday was subsequently arrested, convicted, and executed by guillotine on 17 July 1793.
