Harrison Hagan “Jack” Schmitt is an American geologist, former NASA astronaut, university professor, and former U.S. senator from New Mexico. He made history by being the only person without a military aviation background to walk on the Moon during the Apollo 17 mission in 1972. Schmitt was part of NASA’s first scientist-astronaut group and is the only professional scientist to have ventured beyond low Earth orbit and visited the Moon. Additionally, he played a significant role in training Apollo astronauts and later pursued a career in politics, serving as a U.S. senator.
