Filarete was a renowned Italian architect and writer of the Renaissance era, notable for his significant work in architecture. He authored a comprehensive book on architecture known as the Libro architettonico, often referred to as a Trattato. This extensive work spanned twenty-five volumes and delved into technical aspects of architecture while also criticizing the Gothic style in favor of classical Roman designs. One of Filarete’s most well-known achievements was his design for the ideal city of Sforzinda, which later served as a key model for city planning in the High Renaissance period.
