Gentile Bellini, an Italian painter from Venice, was highly regarded in his early career, surpassing his brother Giovanni Bellini’s reputation. He became the official portrait artist for the Doges of Venice in 1474. Bellini took on important commissions for the Scuole Grandi of Venice, creating grand scenes with many figures. His journey to Constantinople in 1479, at the request of the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II, influenced his later works featuring Eastern themes. Bellini’s Orientalist style left a lasting impact on Western painting.
