Deke Slayton was a highly skilled American Air Force pilot, aeronautical engineer, and test pilot. He was part of the original NASA Mercury Seven astronauts and went on to become NASA’s first Chief of the Astronaut Office and Director of Flight Crew Operations. Slayton’s impressive career spanned serving in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II, earning a degree in aeronautical engineering, working at Boeing, attending the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School, and playing a key role in the development of the Space Shuttle.
