Birthplace: Sacramento, California, United States
Died: April 6, 2012
Thomas Kinkade was an American painter recognized for his realistic, pastoral, and idyllic artwork. He achieved great success by marketing his paintings as printed reproductions and licensed products. Kinkade coined the term “Painter of Light” and trademarked it. Despite his popularity, he faced criticism for his business practices and his work being labeled as “kitsch” by art critics. Kinkade’s company claimed that one in every 20 American homes owned a copy of his paintings. He passed away at the age of 54 due to “acute intoxication” from alcohol and diazepam.
