Leonard Skinner, a high school gym teacher and basketball coach at Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville, Florida, gained fame for his strict policy against long hair. This policy inspired members of the rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, such as Ronnie Van Zant, Gary Rossington, and Bob Burns, to name their band after him. After retiring from coaching in 1970, Skinner ventured into the real estate business. He allowed the band to use his business sign for their album and developed a close friendship with the band members, even opening a bar named “The Still” in Jacksonville. Skinner passed away in 2010.
