John Walter founded The Times newspaper in 1785 after transitioning from the coal business to underwriting and printing. In 1782, he acquired a patent for a new printing method and established the Logographic Office. He later started The Daily Universal Register in 1785, which eventually became The Times. Despite legal challenges for libel, Walter’s printing business prospered. He handed over management to his son before retiring in 1795.
