Josephus Daniels was an American diplomat and newspaper editor who served as Secretary of the Navy during World War I under President Woodrow Wilson. He later became the U.S. Ambassador to Mexico under President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Daniels was a prominent figure in North Carolina during the early 20th century, supporting public education, public works, regulation of trusts and railroads, prohibition, and women’s suffrage. He was a strong advocate for white supremacy and segregation, playing a key role in disenfranchising African Americans in the state.
