Mary Whiton Calkins was a pioneering American philosopher and psychologist known for her innovative research on memory, dreams, and the self. Calkins established the first women’s psychological laboratory at Wellesley College and was the first woman to fulfill the requirements for a doctoral degree in psychology at Harvard University. She later served as president of both the American Psychological Association and the American Philosophical Association. Teaching psychology and philosophy at Wellesley College for forty years, Calkins conducted research at Harvard University, leaving a lasting impact on the history of women in psychology.
