Marian “Clover” Hooper Adams was an American socialite known for her role as a society hostess in Washington, DC. She was also an accomplished amateur photographer. Clover’s influence extended to literature, with her being cited as the inspiration for Henry James’s characters in “Daisy Miller” and “The Portrait of a Lady.” Following her tragic suicide, her husband Henry Adams commissioned the famous Adams Memorial in her honor. Despite her significant impact on Henry Adams’s life, she was largely omitted from his public narrative.
