Leopold Kohr, an economist, jurist, and political scientist, was known for his opposition to the “cult of bigness” in social organization and as a key figure in the Small Is Beautiful movement. He was a Professor of Economics and Public Administration for almost twenty years at the University of Puerto Rico. Kohr identified as a “philosophical anarchist” and his most influential work was The Breakdown of Nations. He was recognized with the Right Livelihood Award for inspiring the movement for a human scale and is associated with degrowth, anti-imperialist, anti-capitalist, and anti-utilitarian ideologies. Kohr also served as a mentor to E.F. Schumacher and Ivan Illich.
