Chalmers Johnson was an American political scientist and professor emeritus at the University of California, San Diego. He served in the Korean War, worked as a CIA consultant, and chaired the Center for Chinese Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. Johnson co-founded the Japan Policy Research Institute, focusing on public education about Japan and Asia. He authored several books, notably discussing the consequences of what he termed the “American Empire” and arguing that a nation cannot be both a democracy and imperialist simultaneously.
