Syama Prasad Mookerjee, an Indian politician and academician, was known for his opposition to the Quit India movement. He served as India’s first Minister for Industry and Supply in Jawaharlal Nehru’s cabinet but resigned due to disagreements over the Liaquat–Nehru Pact. With the support of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, he founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, which later evolved into the Bharatiya Janata Party. Mookerjee also held the position of president of Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha and passed away in 1953 after being arrested in Jammu and Kashmir.
